In my second year as a runway model at the same venue, I was going to be walking solo and making two complete turns on the catwalk to show off my outfit, another pink dress. This task filled me with importance as I was coached during rehearsals on how to make those turns—slowly and stopping in the pose, toe pointed. At the last minute a friend of my grandmother's asked me if I would take with me her daughter, Pat, the eldest of her two children. I did not want to because this was my gig, but I knew I could not refuse, since she was an important friend of my grandmother's from her work with the government. Not to mention that the red vinvyl outfit was the ultimate in chic. So I took Pat's hand and walked her down the runway with me, but she ruined all my turns because she thought it was a game and was swinging around very fast. It was all I could do to keep her in check.
Nevertheless, my diplomacy seemed to endear me to both Pat and her mother and I was always invited to their house and out to dinner whenever I visited Bangkok while my grandmother was alive. Pat's mother spoke excellent French because her father had been the ambassador to France. At her home, she had in her garden, an antique Thai house. It had been deconstructed and transported from the countryside to be rebuilt in her yard. You can do that with Thai houses quite easily because they are built as panels that are pegged together. The effect was utterly charming because it was on stilts and she had it installed over the pond and there was a traditional Thai boat moored to one of the pilings under it. I was invited to a lunch at the house for her friends who met there to practice their French. My middling French was put to the test, but it was my father's Leica that drew more attention. One participant pointed out that I was trying to take pictures with an antique camera.
Some years later I visited Thailand with my then girlfriend who also spoke French and we were again wined and dined by the ambassador's daughter. The two expressed surprise at how authentic the other's accent was. "It is very unusual to hear such good French especially from an American", said the ambassador's daughter. "And also difficult for a Thai," my girlfriend pointed out, quite unaware of how she was outranked. Neither seemed insulted by the assumptions of the other.
This is another press photo printed on glossy 5 x 7 paper which seemed very impressive at the time. I have also mastered the art of folding my socks down so they don't look so nerdy. I remember this dress being quite special, too, as it was made for a wedding, a Western style wedding at an actual church though the couple was Thai. I was one of the bride's attendants with another girl in the same dress. We carried white baskets so we could throw rose petals in the aisle.

Diana Eng presented the Fairytale Fashion Collection in a technology fashion show on Wed., February 24, 7PM, at Eyebeam. Models hit the runway while an orchestra of circuit bending DJ’s create music from hacked video game consoles.
The Fairytale Fashion Collection uses technology to create magical clothing in real life. Electronics, mechanical engineering, and mathematics are used to create clothing with blooming flowers, changing colors and transforming shapes. Research and development for the Fairytale Fashion collection are shared online at FairytaleFashion.org as an educational tool that teaches about science, math, and technology through fashion. Fairytale Fashion was created with the support of Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the United States.
Diana Eng is a fashion designer who specializes in technology, math, and science. Her designs range from inflatable clothing to fashions inspired by mechanical engineering. She is a designer from Bravo’s Emmy nominated TV show, Project Runway season 2 and author of Fashion Geek: Clothes, Accessories, Tech. Diana is cofounder of NYC Resistor hacker group. Diana is currently a resident artist at Eyebeam.

Charity Fashion Show Backstage

On 17 July 2011 was the first charity fashion show at the Palais Prinz Carl, Heidelberg, Germany, in favor of the Rhine-Neckar region. Here young designers from the region presented the latest fashion trends and offered their "jewels" for sale.
What was the purpose of this event?
A dark shadow has been cast over the fascinating world of fashion in recent years. Increasingly we see on the big fashion shows of this world, young women who are visibly underweight. The keyword is Size 0. To meet this "ideal", some girls / women sometimes almost starve to death or develop an eating disorder and bulimia, only to maintain their weight.
In this show women dressed size 34 - 42. To send a signal of awareness, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of clothes and all donations will benefit the Luca association, who cares for people with eating disorders. This was done freehanded in a quite dark environment with the 50mm 1,4 going for expression rather than sharpness.

Kate is pulling yet another late night. As I finished my teaching early tonight I headed in about 8pm with some food for us both. As we're sharing the Prius (my car isn't going anywhere right now) I decided to stay until she was done.
This is the classic geek coding late. A bottle of diet Coke, a Starbucks Mug from earlier on, and an intense look on her face while listening to some rock music... Yup, that's my Girlfriend at the moment...

Run to the Sun is a cool store in Anchorage, Alaska that offers swim and resort wear as well as tanning. Every year as part of the Alaska's Womens Show, Run to the Sun has a fashion show offering the latest fashion styles for us sun/beach deprived locals. The show is great to watch. Photographing it a bit tricky since the lighting at the Sullivan Arena is tough (for me) to shoot.
I've met a lot of great models through the show and hope to continue this - the women and men that Michelle uses are very classy and fun to shoot with.
FYI - the shows were in April in the past but due to scheduling conflicts the Womens Show moved to September so in 2010 we had two fashion shows. You won't hear me complaining!
